The Winans

Long recognized as the first family of gospel, the Winans consist of 10 remarkably talented children -- plus Mom and Pop, both of whom sing their hearts out. The best known in the family are the much emulated Winans (a quartet of the older brothers Marvin, Carvin, Michael, and Ronald), the celebrated duo BeBe and CeCe, and the indomitable Vickie. And they're all topnotch vocalists. Here are the family's essential recordings.

At the height of her creative and vocal abilities in the late '90s, CeCe Winans weighed in heavily with this marvelously accessible collection of R&B-styled contemporary gospel. From the bouncy groove of "Well, Alright" to the vinyl-like crackle of "I Am" to the superb breakbeat spiritual of the Lauryn Hill-penned and -produced "On That Day," Winans has carved the keys to a city in which both the sacred and secular populations can dance. Twice given the Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the... Read more

The Detroit-born and -bred Winans brothers Marvin, Carvin, Michael, and Ronald didn't so much bridge as hop over the gap between old-school traditional and new-school contemporary gospel, often taking heat for blurring the lines between the sacred and secular worlds. While some of their work is out of print, or difficult to find, the hour-plus Light Years collection has some of the grooviest, funkiest God-praising tunes from their early-'80s albums Introducing the Winans, Long Time Comin', and ... In the same year that Amy Grant achieved household-name status with her crossover album Heart in Motion, Bebe and CeCe Winans rocked out in celebration of Jesus' light with the amazing Mavis Staples on the duo's remake of the gospel-soul monster hit "I'll Take You There." Certified platinum, Different Lifestyles generated a chunk of No. 1 hits, placed at the top of both Billboard's gospel and R&B charts, and resulted in a slew of awards from the NAACP and the Dove and Grammy folks. While dated by its synthesized keyboard work, Heaven still stands as some of the best work BeBe and CeCe Winans have done. BeBe had a hand in writing each tune, with the exception of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The interplay of the two voices is striking amid the marriage of popular music's production values and Christian-based lyrics. Additionally, this disc laid a foundation that ushered in a new phase of contemporary gospel, paving the way for solo careers and the likes of Kirk... Read more
